World Hepatitis Day ( 28 July, 2018 )

Dear Parents,

This letter is an expression our good gesture to spread awareness regarding Hepatitis Day celebrated all over the world on 28 July.
We understand that our parents are already aware about health even then we feel that this letter will spark the idea of impending hazards that surround us in our day to day life.

The root cause of Hepatitis is the malfunctioning of liver. The major functions of liver in our body are:

It makes bile that helps in digestion

• Changes food into energy

• Produces proteins necessary for our body

• Regulates glucose (sugar) in the blood and stores extra sugar

• Helps the stomach in digestion of food

• Stores necessary vitamins and minerals

• Removes poisonous substances from the blood

If a person is infected by Hepatitis, his/her liver gets swelling, in most of the cases, Hepatitis is caused by viruses. Beyond Hepatitis A, other category Hepatitis are (B, C and D) which are very dangerous. Sometimes it can lead to cancer of liver.

• Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus. In India, its prevalence is 1%. It has a ten times higher prevalence than hepatitis B in Uttrakhand especially in U S Nagar.

Though vaccines protect against hepatitis A and B but so far there is no effective vaccine for hepatitis C, D & E. Therefore we request you to take all preventive measures such as:

• Drink clean / boiled water

• Use safe syringe for injection/blood transmission

• Avoid eating at unhygienic places

• Get hepatitis vaccination

Moreover it is always said that prevention is better than cure. Hence it is our humble request to discuss with the children in the family about the causes of Hepatitis & its prevention.

Yours sincerely,

Team JGS
